Chelmsford City Racecourse https://chelmsfordcityracecourse.com/, in Essex, England is pleased to announce a ground-breaking green energy solution to power the racecourse and other local development, thereby reducing reliance on the current system of diesel generators. The project, to be delivered by Essex-based technology company easyPower, which is part of the easy family of brands (www.easy.com), runs on solid recovered fuel (SRF) to generate electricity using a process known as ‘pure pyrolysis’.

This is the first plant of a new generation of this technology and will be used as a demonstrator for other potential clients and is expected to attract visitors from across the UK and internationally. easyPower (www.easypower.global) believe that this will be the most sustainable technology available, with significantly reduced carbon emissions and other environmental impacts. The technology is seen as part of a move away from centralised, high carbon energy generation to a localised and green energy system. It could contribute significantly to Essex County Council’s target to be a Net Zero county by 2050.

The first plant represents an initial investment of c £10m and will create in the region of 18 high quality jobs. The scheme will also include a revolutionary green hydrogen technology. Educational visits will be provided for local schools and colleges.

John Holmes, Planning Director at Chelmsford City Racecourse said: ‘We are delighted to be working with easyPower to deliver this important technology, which will help to reduce carbon emissions of our operation and the wider area. Chelmsford City Racecourse is one of the most advanced in the country and adding in this sustainable innovation is very exciting.’

Jason Ferrando, co-founder of easyPower, said: ‘Our process heats material in the absence of air to create accelerated decomposition of the organic matter. Material is converted at a molecular level. Our process is Pure Pyrolysis, so unlike any other thermal system, there is absolutely no combustion. The end-result is the creation of three outputs: a high quality low carbon gas stream which is used to create electricity or hydrogen, a solid carbon residue and heat.’

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou , creator and owner of the easy family of brands, said: ‘I believe the easyPower green energy solution could help defeat the climate crisis. It’s good to be doing our bit for the planet whilst solving the problem of waste management and providing clean energy at the same time.’

The planning application for this plant was submitted to the local council on the 17 May 2021.
